Chapter Nineteen

Victoria woke up to no new messages.

Anxiety swept over her, as she tried to interpret what he meant by his last message.

He doesn’t know what time I leave in the morning, he doesn’t even know where I work. It’s fine, she assured herself.

Assurances aside, she still rushed through her morning routine and was able to leave a half hour early, hoping to throw off Grayson, or anyone else who may be watching her. While leaving her building, she patted her bag, making sure her vial was still safely hidden among her belongings.

When she was approaching Grayson’s building, she placed her coat’s hood over her head and picked up her pace, hoping that he would not be awake yet.

“Good morning Victoria.”

“Shit!” Victoria screamed, arms flailing out in surprise. With her head down, she didn’t see Grayson casually walk out of his building to meet her.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you,” he laughed. “Honesty, I almost didn’t recognize you with your hood on.” He laughed even harder.

That was the freakin’ point.

“I wasn’t trying to disguise myself, I was cold,” she said, defending her actions.

“Of course. Shall we?”

“Shall we what?”

“I’m walking you to work,” he replied in a way to suggest that his actions should be obvious.

“Why are you even up? Your store doesn’t open for another two hours?”

“I don’t need much sleep. I like to be up hours before the sun. I sit by the window, sketching furniture designs, while watching the sunrise, even though it makes me feel like crap when it rises,” he explained.

“So, you easily saw me coming?”

“I did. Before you can protest, which I know you are just itching to do, do I really need to state my arguments again as to why I feel the need to walk with you?”

“I should have walked a different way,” she mumbled to herself. “Who cares if it would have taken me so much longer.”

“This is what friends do. You are my friend, in a troublesome situation. I may not be your friend yet, but you are mine,” he said.

“Uhhh, this is too much before my morning coffee, which I skipped, trying to avoid all this,” she said, waving her hand between them. “Let’s go.”

Grayson smiled and fell into step.

“Don’t expect me to talk,” she warned him.

“No talking before your morning coffee. Got it.”

She didn’t say anything but snuck a glance his way. He was silently laughing to himself, eyes focused ahead.

After walking for fifteen minutes, Victoria stopped in front of a coffee shop.

“This is where we part, and where I caffeinate.”

“I don’t know…” Grayson started to protest, so Victoria cut him off.

“My work is just around the corner, and the street is busy. Brown car guy already knows where I work, so if he sees me now, it’s not a big deal,” she explained.

“I would argue and say that it is a big deal to have someone watching you, but I get what you are saying. You don’t want me to see where you work.”

“You got it.”

“No problem. We can meet at this coffee shop after work and then walk home together,” he stated.
